Today we were going to enter 3 countries throughout the whole trip – starting from Jesolo, in Italy, entering and driving through Slovenia and onto where we are staying in Croatia, Stara Lonja, fairly near to the Bosnian border….
9th May 2016
Our time in the western countries was over, we were closing onto the border with Slovenia, and the Balkan countries. The weather here was good, the sun was out, but there were clouds in the sky. As we sped along the highway to the border, the rain had caught us… Thankfully, it didn’t thunder down, instead it was a light dribble.
Once at the border, we stopped to buy a Vignette. Vignettes are a sticker that you put on the drivers side of the windscreen ( however, in our case it was on the passenger side because we have a British registered car and as I continuously tell Geoff, our steering wheel appears to be on the wrong side ).
Many other countries like Austria, Switzerland and Hungary also have vignettes. Once this was stuck on and our cups of coffee drank, we set of through the Shengen border and into Slovenia……
The green pastures, and pointy trees were beautiful, however, as soon as we entered the country, the rain began to fall….. Fast. In a state of some urgency, we had to stop at a service station for an emergency driver change. At the wheel now was mum, who, once in the drivers seat, sped of the mark like Lewis Hamilton at the start of a race. We quickly reached the border in good time and had now entered our third, and final country of the day…. Croatia!
As the rain stopped the roads got narrower and mum chickened out, so Once again, Geoff took the wheel and we sped along past the lush green trees and into the dark and Mysterious forests….
……..We encountered a man carrying a scythe over his shoulder, another brandishing a pick axe, each one eyed us suspiciously, in fact everybody we passed eyed us suspiciously…. It seemed a little eerie. Another man scowled as he drove his tractor with dangerous looking savage teeth things ( the tractor, not the man!) straight at us, then turned round to stare some more as he passed… Gulp! We kind of had the feeling that we were driving straight into some macabre horror film………..
…….then we encountered our 300 year old wooden houses and a smiley waving man, I think the driving had made my eyes go funny because there were two smiley wavey men, I was seeing double!!!!
Ah, no…….twins! Our hosts Maladin and his brother Egor….. Wishing to treat us to a ” welcome drink ” ” okay then, ” said Mum and Geoff. We discussed politics of all things, late into the night. Listening to the frogs, croaking, and the mosquitos humming.
Loving it here!
